Commander Charles (Chuck) N. Mawer

Chuck MawerMr. Mawer was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on September 11, 1917. Upon graduation from high school in 1935 he joined Richardson Graves as a CA Articling Student.

In 1936 he joined the Naval Reserve as Mid Shipman. From 1936 to the end of World War II he served in Staff Operations and aboard the Haida, a Tribal Class Destroyer that saw battle in the English Channel and was involved in escorting troop convoys to France on D Day, June 1944. Upon his retirement from the Navy he held the rank of Commander and received the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions at sea.

In 1940 he married Mary “Nibs” Graveley and together they raised four children – Stephanie, Pamela, Peter and Martha. They were married for 62 years until the passing of Nibs on November 11, 2002.

Mr. Mawer rejoined Richardson Graves in 1945 to complete his accounting training. Subsequently, he worked at the Mannix Company, Tanner & Company and McLeod Young Weir. He remained at McLeod Young Weir until 1974 serving as the manager of the Calgary office and Alberta Director.

In 1974, at the age of 57, Mr. Mawer started Mawer & Associates. His vision, “Do the Right Thing,” differentiated his new firm from other investment managers. He believed if the firm always did the right thing on behalf of clients, success would follow.

Mr. Mawer retired in 1995 at the age of 78. He passed away on October 29, 2006 at the age of 89.

His unrivaled integrity continues to guide us today.
